Over the last 2+ years we have had pods of iPads (3x6) available to use in all classrooms and over the last year each student has had access to an iPad during their weekly library lesson (16 - one between 2). We also have iPads available to the Enrichment team (5). The use of these iPads has been varied, from drill & practice, to Internet browsing and content creating. Over this time I have offered various types of PD sessions for the staff, boot-camp type lessons with particular classes (at teacher’s requests), information sessions for parents and have worked with classes during my library lessons on various work-flow options relevant to the set task.
Currently I am managing all the iPads, which is an ENORMOUS job. The downloading & updating of Apps and software is time-consuming & at times not possible on our school network. I often have to take the iPads home to carry out this task. Late last term we purchased an iPad for every classroom teacher to support them with their teaching. I assisted every teacher to set up their device and I will continue to offer support with relevant and consistent PD sessions throughout the year. A once a fortnight-scheduled meeting is planned with a choice of 2 different times to enable flexibility for all staff to attend one of the sessions. It is hoped by providing the staff with their own iPad they will become comfortable with their device & begin to realise its potential as a powerful and exciting tool to support learning. They are already using it with the “Real Time Roll” & for emails. This term I will be working every Friday, availing myself more time to support student & teacher learning in the area of ICT.
