1:1 iPad Plan for Year 5 2023
www.educomit.com.au/dowSt Thomas Aquinas has integrated a BYODD (Bring Your Own Designated Device) iPad Program for all students in Years 5 and 6, to prepare them for a world that demands they address and manage information, communication and collaboration in many areas of the work place and their personal life. 2023 will be the 9th year that St Thomas Aquinas will be running the BYODD Program. BYODD means that students will own, and are personally responsible for their iPad that they are using at school.
BYODD also means that you can decide where you will purchase your child’s iPad and you are encouraged to take advantage of any deals on offer. If parents have entered into a warranty agreement with suppliers, all warranty repairs should be followed up with suppliers. The school will not be responsible for the repair or replacement of iPads. iPads come with a 2-year warranty and additionally, AppleCare+ adds a form of accidental-breakage cover.
If your child currently has an iPad for their exclusive use at school, then that iPad may be suitable as long as it has the latest iPadOS software. Below you will find information regarding One-to-one iPads in primary schools. The 10.2” iPad 9th Gen is the current model iPad and the RRP for this iPad starts from $499 (Apple Store) . Please note that the iPad Mini is not supported for NAPLAN Online and should not be purchased.
Educom IT offers families in our Diocese discounted iPads which can be purchased online via a Parent Portal. Pricing for the iPad (9th Gen) is $451 for 64GB and $665 for 256GB. A Parent Flyer is attached which also provides information on the Parent Portal. Select STA & use passcode BYOD2018 to access the portal.

However, please feel free to shop around for the best price. Office Works is another good option.
We also recommend that the iPad is Wi-Fi only— not Cellular. This means there are no additional internet usage charges, and your child will only be connected to the internet when Wi-Fi is available.
Why implement a 1:1 iPad Plan?
The i in iPad means individual. It is not intended to be shared, to have multiple simultaneous users.
In the last 10 years Apps (software on the iPad) have significantly improved and have more depth and sophistication. Therefore a considerable part of the plan is the careful discernment of Apps that are suited to the primary learning environment. Apps in the education sector have moved from drill and practice to the context of creation and presentation.
In our learning context, there is no intention to replace the teacher with the iPad, or that the iPad would be in use the total time a student is in class. Research tells us that it is the teacher who makes the significant improvement in learning achievement and learning gain for students.
The iPad will not replace all books, writing, drawing, sport or art. The iPad will not be in constant use - it is intended to be a learning tool to complement and support the learning and achievement not TO BE the learning.
Content creation is the aspect of learning where students demonstrate & explain their learning – it is the choice and use of Apps to create that content. The students will learn to fluently move between Apps in a workflow in order to accomplish any task.
In the 21st century, content /information/ knowledge is readily available. We are now living in a world where technology allows for learning to occur 'anywhere, anytime'. The skill is in collecting, organising and verifying that information. So it is not about the Apps themselves – it is how you use them to organise data, develop skills, collaborate with others, form opinions and discuss, communicate and share what you have learned.
The iPad is a tool for learning. Gaming and entertainment Apps will be banned during school hours.
Our 1:1 program began in 2014 with the Year 5 cohort and due to its seamless integration and success will continue next year. Digital Citizenship & Cyber safety workshops for both students and parents will be revisited (introduced to STA in 2012 - links from our school website) to help support families while working through the issues ‘on the internet’.
Emailing is an important & necessary tool to use with the iPad as a way of sharing & collaborating work with the teacher and/or other students. All students in this cohort will be taught emailing rules & etiquette (by Mrs. Preddey and classroom teachers) as past of the CEO Google Apps for Education rollout.
A substantial part of this implementation is the focus on the teachers. As teachers we are constantly reflecting on our practice as individuals, colleagues and as a staff. The CEO DLTF (Diocesan Learning & Teaching Framework) provides teachers with a mechanism to analyse how teaching practice can be changed to improve student performance and achievement. Linking the DLTF with the National Professional Standards for Teachers that was recently published, allows us to examine our practice and ensure that we are always improving; because as we improve and change the direction, the implication is that our students’ learning also improves.

Expectations for STA students
(STA iPad policy/user agreement will be discussed with students & parents Prior to use in the classroom)
Below are the expectations for student use of the iPad at School.
Proper Care and Handling of the iPad
Here are some basic tips for handling your iPad in the proper manner.
Accessories
In addition to your iPad, you will need a case and a set of headphones/earbuds. You may also have an Apple Pencil or stylus. You will want to find a consistent place to store and care for your accessories as well. Unplug your headphones when not in use, as this provides an opportunity for breakage when you store the iPad.
- Bring the iPad each day to school, fully charged. It's best to get in the habit of charging the iPad at the end of the day each day. That way, you get a full night's charge and will be ready for the start of school the next day. IMPORTANT: Be sure that you are using the charger that came with the iPad, not an iPhone charger. The power requirements are higher for the iPad. Also make sure that you are charging from a wall outlet, not a computer, as the charging time will be much quicker.
- Keep the iPad in its case. Keeping it in the case at all times helps to ensure it stays protected from accidental wear and tear.
- Store the iPad in a safe place when not in use. If you are not using the iPad during some time in class, be sure to store it away in a safe location. Place the device in the area designated by your class teacher.
- Use the iPad for school-related activities: During free time at school, such as recess and lunch, the iPad is not to be used as it is intended for school-related activities, not games or videos.
- Keep electronic communication school related. During instructional activities, electronic communication is to be focused solely on the activity at hand. No non-school related e-communication is allowed during the school day.
Proper Care and Handling of the iPad
Here are some basic tips for handling your iPad in the proper manner.
- Do not set the iPad near liquids or objects of extreme heat. Keep it out of direct sunlight and rain.
- Do not leave your iPad in plain sight, in public, as someone may take it.
- When storing the iPad in your backpack (i.e. to and from school) make sure to avoid other objects that might damage the screen, such as any object with hard, sharp corners. (store iPad in an extra small bag or wrap iPad in a small towel to store in backpack)
- If you need to clean the screen, use a soft cloth (such as those used for sunglasses) and wipe the screen in a circular motion. Do not use any cleaning liquids.
